Amid growing incidents of atrocities on Dalits and agitation against caste-based discrimination, an RSS-affiliated body, Samajik Samrasta Manch (SSM), has organised a function to felicitate Dalit candidates who cleared UPSC and GPSC examination to become the senior government officials. The programme is the in this decade.
The event will be organised jointly by SMM and Sewa Bharti-Gujarat and will be attended by state Governor OP Kohli and additional director general of police (ADGP) Anil Pratham beside other RSS leaders. The SMM will felicitate four UPSC and 24 GPSC pass-outs of 2017.
However, Dalit activists are crying foul over the timing of such an event. They feel that it has been organised with the 2019 general elections in mind. “What could be reason behind the event other than the 2019 elections?” wondered Dalit activist Martin Macwan.
“We don’t consider Dalits ‘special’. They are as common as other people in the country. So why is such a programme needed?” he asked. He pointed out that as per their survey, 90 per cent of Dalits in the state were not allowed to enter in the temple.
